The Westmorland & North Lancs DA visited Dalefoot Compost at Heltondale near Penrith recently. Dalefoot is a working farm which has branched out into compost and soil conditioner manufacture using the plentiful "local" ingredients (sheep's wool and bracken).

Members enjoyed a guided tour of the compost manufacturing facility where the owner described the manufacturing process and the different types of compost they produce. Although most of the compost trials are done offsite by individual growers they do have a small polytunnel and greenhouse where they try out new mixes. The aim is to produce a compost capable of growing tomatoes to maturity without any extra feeding.
