On Sunday 27th August, the Scottish Branch Championships were held in the Tait Hall, Kelso.  The show was a resounding success with one of our largest entries. Many Thanks go to all our exhibitors especially those who travelled many miles from the North of Scotland and for all those who ventured over the border from the Welsh, Northern, Midlands and Southern Branch, it was great to see you all there.

In addition to the regular vegetable classes, the Marshall’s Satelit French bean competition was held.  A number of Scottish Growers however, did not have their beans ready on time (we have found out it takes a lot longer than 60 days in our colder climate).  Well done to Mark Hall, Sherie Plumb & Gareth Cameron for their 1st, 2nd & 3rd winning entries. Hopefully some of the Scottish Growers will be ready to enter  the Northern Branch Champs instead.

Another new class for this year was the fun event for the longest chilli.  Sponsored by Canna, Autopots and Shield and greatly supported by Premier Hydroponics who grew on circa 85 Chilli plants for distribution (seeds courtesy of Dene Finley, the Chilli Lab), we had an amazing entry of 79 chillies staged.  Great job every one. Our winners in this class were 1st Scott Hodgeson, 2nd Sam Jackson and 3rd Ian stocks, all with Chillies over 12” long.

The show had a lovely atmosphere and our friends and Kelso Horticultural societies local show also benefitted from additional entries.  All in all a great day.

Many thanks go to the hard work of Frank Taylor, Neil Muirhead, Linda Stocks and Gareth Cameron who out in a power load of work for the show.  Also thankyou to our hard working judges; John(Hoss) Martin, Jim Pearson, Jim Veitch & Alan Yates and to Jim Mercer & Jean Thomson for helping steward. Thanks also to everyone who helped set up and dismantle the show benches , boards, labelling etc, your help is invaluable.

For your information, all winning entries have now been posted on the NVS Flickr account and each photo has been saved to include the winners name and the variety of the veg staged.
